Easy Rider Movie (1969) : A Film that Influenced Motorcycling Culture

Films 1

Dennis Hopper's Easy Rider, a rough diamond of a film has become a real gem in our collections. The film is often cited as being an all-time classic, while we don't think this film is great in terms of its technical brilliance, it sums up the era it was made in. We love this film for its portrayal of what freedom meant for the people of that decade. It was a time, when motorbiking culture was evolving and turned out to be the “American Dream”.

This film is a depiction of the sixties and, like many things from the decade, such as music and the hippie culture, will always be very fondly remembered by the youngsters of that generation. Dennis Hopper and Peter Fonda, men of substance and substance abuse, wrote the film together with Hopper directing it.

The two great men were obviously in the thick of what was cool in the sixties, which gives the film an element of authenticity. We are made to feel what we're seeing isn't too far away from the things really going on at the time.

The plot is simple and acts as a base for the film to deliver its real sting than anything else. It follows two motorbike riders on their way from Los Angeles to the Mardi Gras in New Orleans.

We follow their exploits as they travel through the country, meeting various people including, George Hanson; an eccentric lawyer, played by Jack Nicholson.

The American Dream has always been about freedom. But as George Hanson says; it's one thing to talk about being free, but something else entirely to actually be it. That's the theme of the entire movie, and the way that it plays out, and the ending especially, befittingly portray the difference between saying something and actually doing it.

The acting performances by the two leads are a big part of the movie. Peter Fonda and Dennis Hopper stick out the most. The two actors brilliantly get into their characters, and after a while you forget that you're watching actors and start to believe that these people really are these characters.

Jack Nicholson turns up halfway through and steals the show. It's not hard to understand why this actor went on to become one of the best of all time. Even in this film, he shows his charisma and ability to steal the show.

Jack Nicholson was nominated an academy award for this film, we can see why he did. His powerful persona and iconic dialogues brought a new light to the film in the second half. One of his dialogues “I’ve got a good one”, referring to a football helmet he possessed summed up the premise of the film, We have written a blog about he significance of  the dialogue in context of the film.

Last but not least, another great thing about Easy Rider is the music. Music was, of course, a big thing in the sixties; and it's a big thing about this movie. Classic rock accompanies the well captured scenes of the two men rider their bikes, and it's very cool to look at.

On the whole, this film is outstanding and classic, reminding us of the days of what freedom really meant. We definitely suggest you watch this relic of a film.
